The base principle behind Aftershoot is to speed up your workflow. So it's not enough to speed up your culling, Aftershoot has a set of Keyboard Shortcuts meant to speed up even your review of a cull.
In this article, we'll review all the shortcuts you can use to streamline your review process in Grid View, Loupe View, and Survey Mode.
Using Shortcuts in Grid View
Once Aftershoot is done culling your images, it will display the results of its work in Grid View by default.
First things you need to know is how to navigate between individual images. Do that by using the Up, Down, Left, and Right arrow keys. You can also navigate between the images in a duplicate group. Use the , (comma) key to show the previous image in a duplicate set and the . (period) key to see the next image.
Next, we’ll immediately introduce you to the three shortcuts you will use the most in Grid View.
Press the S key to swap an image in a set with one of its duplicates
Press the A key to mark the image as Selected
Press the X key to clear the Star Rating AND Color Label of an Image
In Grid View, click on the 5-Star Selected Quick Filter, and look at the Duplicates of the image you’re reviewing in the right-hand drawer. Clicking on one of the Duplicate images and pressing the S key, will swap the 5-Star rating of the original image with that of the Duplicate.
If you’re on any other Quick Filter, pressing the S key will replace the Star & Color rating of the current image with the one for the Quick Filter you’re currently in.
In case you’re not in Grid View AND not on an image with Duplicates the S key and A keys won’t have any effect - they’re strictly for working with images with Duplicates.
And of course, the D key shortcut that enables My Selections - just select an image and press it to add to the My Selections group.
Now that we’re done with that, we can dive into more details about changing the Star Ratings and Color Labels.
Change the Star Rating of an image by using the 1 through 5 keys to assign the same amount of Stars.
To change the image's Color Label:
Press the 6 key to assign the color Red to an image
Press the 7 key to assign the color Yellow to an image
Press the 8 key to assign the color Green to an image
Press the 9 key to assign the color Blue to an image
Press the - key to assign the color Purple to an image
Clearing the Star Rating and Color Label is just as easy:
Press the 0 key OR the = key to clear the Star Rating AND Color Rating of an image.
Using Shortcuts in Loupe View
For now, let's move on from the Grid View and go into Loupe View. You can do that by pressing the Spacebar key, the L key, or the Return key.
Besides the difference in how it looks this view carries the same mission - to help you review the cull quicker and easier. Hence all the shortcuts that we described in the Grid View section work here as well.
When you come across a duplicate set and want to reject or delete images inside it, you can use the following shortcuts:
Press the Z key to reject all images in a set
Press the Shift+Backspace/ Shift+Delete keys together to remove a complete image set
Press the Backspace/ Delete key to delete an image from a set
Note: When you press Backspace/ Delete, a warning pop-up box will appear, asking you to confirm if you’re sure. Please pay attention to the “Remember my choice for this album”. If you check this box, the warning pop-up won’t appear anymore when you press Backspace/ Delete in this album.
The keyboard shortcuts we reviewed previously can be used all across Aftershoot, regardless of which View or Mode you're using. But some are exclusive to Loupe View:
Press the Option/Alt+Left Arrow or +Right Arrow keys together to show the previous or the next Key Face
Press the Spacebar key to zoom into the image you're viewing
Press the Q key to display the info about the image you're viewing
Press the F key to display the current image in fullscreen
Press the I key to display the Image Score of the image you're viewing
Using Shortcuts in Survey Mode
And now let's move on to the last culling review mode in Aftershoot - Survey Mode. Press the N key to switch to it.
Like before, besides the Loupe View exclusive shortcuts, everything we covered above also works in Survey Mode.
There is only one shortcut exclusive to this mode and it's the R key, which will remove an image from Survey Mode.
Besides that, you can press Command+Option+K/ Control+Option+K keys together to enter Spray Can Mode (it also works in Grid View) as well - it is perfectly paired with this mode.
When you're done in Survey Mode you can press the G key to go back to Grid View.
General Shortcuts
Besides shortcuts that are related to modes and navigation, there are also some useful general shortcuts when working in Aftershoot.
Press the / key to hide the right drawer with filters, duplicates, and such
Press the Esc key to go back to the previous screen in Aftershoot
Press the Command/Control+Z keys together to undo your previous action
Press the [ key to rotate the image to the left
Press the ] key to rotate the image to the right
Press the F1/ Fn+F1 key to contact the Support Team
We understand that these are a lot to remember and made sure to provide you with a cheat sheet. In Grid View, Loupe View, and Survey Mode, look in the top-right corner of the image review screen, to find a key-shaped icon and click on it.
Click Preferences/Settings in the top menu bar. On the left, you will see Keyboard Shortcuts.
All the keyboard shortcuts in Aftershoot are presented here under 4 categories - Stars & Colors, Grid View, Loupe View, and Others.
You can change a shortcut by clicking on it once. When a pop-up window appears - press the key or key combination that you wish to use instead of this shortcut.
The change will be reflected in the field under the shortcut's name, as well as the Keyboard Shortcut cheat sheet in your culling screen. When you're done, don't forget to click Save Changes in the upper right.
