How to Use Tethered Shooting

Streamline your shoots to the next level with tethered shooting. Connect your camera to a system with Aftershoot on it and apply AI Editing & Retouching as you shoot.

To use tethered shooting in Aftershoot, you will need a compatible camera and a compatible data transfer cable.

There are two methods to begin. The first one is to open Aftershoot, connect and turn on your camera, and select the tethered shooting mode. Then click Create New Album in the pop-up window that will appear.

Alternatively, press + Create New Album on Aftershoot’s home screen.

On the next screen, look at the bottom and click on Tethered Shooting.

Now you need to select your preferences for this shoot. Find out what each one is responsible for in the description below.

Here you need to select the image type and quality in which you will take the images. By default, it syncs with your camera. So if you were to select shooting in RAW in Aftershoot, your camera will change it to RAW as well.

Select which image format should be imported into your Aftershoot session.

Click on either of these two tabs to set the AI Editing and/or AI Retouching settings for each of them, from the list below it. Please note that should you choose to import both RAWs and JPEGs, they can’t be edited at the same time - one has to be chosen.

For example, you chose RAW+JPEG (Extra Fine) format and both RAW and JPEG for import into Aftershoot. Then you choose a RAW-only AI Profile for editing - only the RAW format images will be edited, with the JPEG images being left as is - and vice versa.

Once you’ve clicked on the tab you want to set up first, begin by choosing an AI Profile or Preset available on your system.

Next, check the box next to Crop, Straighten, and/or AI Mask if you’d like the AI to do these for you.

Retouch Preset

If you’d like Aftershoot to retouch the images as well, select one of the existing Retouch Presets available in the list.

Here you can change the default destination folder for your images from this shoot and set your file naming preferences.

With everything set up, click the Start Shooting button.

In the right-hand side panel, you can change the settings of your shoot in real time.

Click on the arrows to change the Aperture, Shutter speed, ISO, and White Balance your camera shoots with. You can also take shots directly from your system by clicking on the white circle.

Please note that these settings can only be changed if permitted by your camera and/or its shooting mode, and only as much as it allows.

Below that, you can change the Format and Import settings you set up previously. You can also modify the Aspect Ratio, Shoot Mode, and Focus Mode. Note that all the changes will apply starting with the next shot you take.

By enabling or disabling the Auto Advance to Next toggle, you can decide if you want Aftershoot to automatically display every new shot you take or if you want to do that manually.

In the bottom part of the side panel, you can modify the preferences related to AI Editing and Retouching that you set up previously. Currently, this can only be done for the incoming images you take, with the option to Sync with the previous image coming soon.

Again, keep in mind that all changes will only apply starting with the next shot you take.

Now you can begin shooting and previewing your images.

If you’d like to make changes to Aftershoot’s edits, you can access manual editing by clicking on the Edit tab.

Here you can make manual adjustments, but note that these will only apply to the image you’re currently on. Similar adjustments can be made for AI Retouching by clicking on the Retouch tab.

Once you’re finished with your shoot, look at the top right corner of the side panel and click on this symbol to end your session. You can do that from any of the three tabs - Tether, Edit, or Retouch.
