Using Advanced Tuning to Mask when Retouching

Written by AftershootAI šŸ¦„

At times, global retouching adjustments aren’t enough to bring your vision for a photo to reality. Certain elements must remain unaltered, in all their glory, to preserve the original thought and feeling behind the photo.

That’s where the Aftershoot Advanced Tuning comes into play, enabling targeted retouching for that picture-perfect result.

What is Advanced Tuning?

In Aftershoot Retouching, you use Advanced Tuning to mask the parts of the image that you don’t want to apply retouching to. For example, there’s a piece of jewelry or a tattoo, and you don’t want it affected by any retouching sliders. Simply apply the mask to that region, and let Aftershoot go to work on the rest of the image.

How to Mask in Aftershoot

To begin, choose an image you want to retouch and adjust the sliders.

Once you’ve done that, look to the right of the Slider Category name, and click on the Correction Tool icon.

Once Advanced Tuning is open, you will notice that the whole image is covered with an opaque red tint. This tint indicates the parts of the image where the retouching sliders will be applied. The way to use it is to ā€œuncoverā€ the parts of the image with the brush.

If you take a look at the right-hand drawer, you will see the brush settings – proceed by adjusting the Brush Size, Softness, and Opacity.

Then click on the Erase Mask button.

With that done, proceed by applying the masking brush to the area that you don’t want to be altered by retouching.

Cleared a bit too much? No worries, simply click on the Draw Mask tab and apply the masking brush to the area that you want to cover back up.

If you wish to start from the beginning, click on the Reset Mask button. But if you’re all done, click on the Save Mask button.

Now, proceed by repeating this process for every retouching Slider Category that you don’t want to apply to this image region.
